The French Market is an open-air market more similar to something you'd find in Europe rather than America, featuring shops, restaurants, and live music. Amongst its 5 blocks, you'll find a variety of different items on offer.

Anyone who enjoys shopping will find fun here, adults and kids alike. A lot of the handcrafted items on offer are catered towards kids, but everyone can enjoy the fresh food and meals made available here. Most people spend about 2 or 3 hours at the market, while some people choose to make a day of it.

The French Market highlights

One of the best aspects of The French Market is the sheer diversity of items available. Like at a farmers market, you'll find fresh produce from local growers along with ready-made meals, but that's just the beginning. You'll also find standard retail shopping, handmade crafts, and works from local artists on offer.

This market is divided up into different sections, and one of the most important is the flea market. While you'll find plenty of items elsewhere, the flea market is where you go to find merchants from international destinations offering unique items you may not be able to find anywhere else in the country.

Good to know when visiting The French Market

As long as you can get to the French Quarter, you can get to The French Market. It's within walking distance of any spot in the district. If you find yourself Uptown, the St. Charles tram can get you to the market, while the Canal Street tram can do the same from Mid-City.

If you're driving yourself to this market, you'll have to be mindful of where you park. The market does not have a dedicated car park, but you'll find numerous spaces along S Peters Street, which is just a block away. These spaces are paid, however, so keep that in mind.
