Miami International Airport (MIA) is a major transportation hub with more than 1,000 flights departing daily to some 160 destinations around the U.S. and abroad. Found 13 km northwest of the city, Miami International Airport is the main airport in South Florida for long-haul international flights and one of the largest flight hubs in the U.S.. Set over 1,300 hectares with 3 terminals, the airport normally handles around 45 million passengers annually.

There are several daily international flights from Miami International Airport to destinations in the Caribbean, Central America and South America, plus many long-haul flights connecting Miami to Europe, Africa and Asia.

It’s also a major hub for American Airlines, the busiest airline at the airport. Miami International Airport is known for its good variety of shops and restaurants, as well as having a vibrant arts program with several galleries and art exhibitions set up around the airport.

What are the highlights of Miami International Airport?

Miami International Airport is the primary airport serving metropolitan Miami. It also serves as a key hub for cruise ship passengers and travelers bound for Latin America, and as such, it was designed to help people move through the airport with relative ease and efficiency. Miami International Airport’s 3 terminals are under the same roof in a U-shaped building, making it possible to walk between the terminals and providing easier access to the automobile parking garages. All 3 terminals are also linked by the airport’s Skyride Connector, a moving walkway system.

MIA has dozens of retail stores, as well as a host of services for visitors including currency exchanges, free Wi-Fi, banks, a non-denominational chapel room, a business center, automobile rental agencies, baggage storage, airport lounges, nursing suites, spas and beauty salons, and even a shoeshine stand. There’s also a range of places to eat at the airport, with a mix of local eateries, fine dining restaurants, cafes and fast-food outlets like Burger King and Pizza Hut to choose from.

What to see and do at Miami International Airport?

While many would rather avoid spending much time at an airport, Miami International Airport has notably earned praise by travelers for being an enjoyable place to dine, shop and explore. If you have some time before catching your flight, you could unwind with a massage at one of the airport’s spas, or do some stretching in the yoga room.

There are several large art installations around the airport, including “Coral Eden”, a massive mural set on two 27-metre-tall stone walls. Six exhibition venues feature the works of local and contemporary artists, while in the South Terminal you’ll find The Hall of Aviation as well as MIAmi Gallery which features the works of filmmakers and video artists.

For an overnight stay without leaving the airport, you could book a room at Miami International Airport Hotel, located inside the airport terminal. Try to stop by the hotel’s Viena restaurant, which offers great views of the airfield.
