DISAPPOINTING - Yes the The George Hotel has history, we had room4 which is supposed to be one of the best rooms . Lighting was poor only one ceiling light worked and that was above the bed canopy. The flooring beneath the carpet was so uneven, I doubt the timbers supporting the floor were fit for purpose. Then there was the hazard 0f 2 steps into the ensuite, different size treads and different height risers, an accident waiting to happen.
The one redeeming feature was the staff, without exception they were wuelcoming, efficient and friendly. In particular a young man ( I believe his name was Miles or Milo) he was working pretty much at the run and seemed to be always on duty . He carried our bags up to o0⁰0ur room and down and out to our car when we left. If The George wants to keep him they need to look after him, I imagine there are many superior hotels in the area who would snap up such a hardworking, willing and charming young man. In conclusion the menu was good and varied both for breakfast and dinner, portions generous as well.
