Immediately after making the reservation, I attempted to cancel it. However, because I opted to pay at the property, I was unable to cancel via Orbitz (information which would have been good to know when making that decision). Orbitz attempted to contact and work it out with the property owner, but to no avail. Property owner said to me that it's on Orbitz to provide the refund - Orbitz said it was on the property owner to provide the refund. Orbitz then said my only remedy was to make a claim via the trip insurance. Even though I selected trip insurance - my claim was denied by the 3rd party they use - Generali Global Assistance & Insurance. In the end, the Property owner billed me for the stay - even though I never showed, called to cancel, had Orbitz call to cancel.
Lessons learned -
a) Insurance rarely works (requires a multitude of paperwork beyond what is easily accessible and has narrow coverage)
b) Don't select "pay at property". This way you can cancel with Orbitz.
c) Orbitz support to reconcile on your behalf is not very efficient. You'll most likely end up doing most of the work.
