At the Ambleside Rushbearing Festival that takes place each year on the first Saturday in July, Ambleside citizens ranging from preschoolers to clergymembers gather rushes and other sweet grasses and carry them through town to place them in St. Mary's Church. This long-held traditional festival is accompanied by the Burneside Brass Band and followed by events such as a church service, sports and the famous Fell Race.

The Rushbearing ceremony dates to the days when churches had earthen floors, and the congregation regularly brought fresh rushes to cover the floors. Today, the ceremony is a community event that includes a small church service followed by a meal of gingerbread, sausage rolls, crisps, biscuits, apples and drinks.
