A huge disappointment
I was really looking forward to my stay at The Candlesticks. However as soon as I entered, I began to have my doubts. The bar area, where the owner received us, looked particularly shabby and it smelt musty. It was 3pm (an hour after checking-in should have started) and the room wasn't ready. It wasn't such a big deal, but it was another warning sign.
I was in a single room, which made a certain saying about a cat spring to mind. The bathroom was fine and the tea/coffee making facilities were good, even including a cafetière, although a more generous supply of ground coffee would have been appreciated.
Probably the worst aspect of all was the mattress. I've never slept on a mattress, which was so old that I could feel the springs. There was no way I could complain to the management as there was nobody on the premises to complain to. The owner was there when we checked in and we bumped into him later in the car park, when he did prove helpful regarding an issue with the shower, but he was never seen again.
Did the experience match the price? Not at all. It failed miserably. We stayed at a similarly priced hotel in Oakham, which was a delight and included a cooked breakfast as opposed to a stripped down Continental breakfast in my tiny room. We could have had a cooked breakfast at The Candlesticks, but were told it would be £15 per person.
This is the first time I've submitted such a negative review.
I hope the owner takes the necessary steps to bring things up to scratch.
