When is the Best Time to Go to Phuket?

Phuket has a tropical monsoonal climate, which sounds dramatic but actually means it’s warm year-round, and has an intense rainy season in September and October. The hottest time of year is from April through May with temperatures around 90 degrees.

Due to its position in the Andaman Sea, Phuket’s weather is mostly mild. The island avoids the majority of the typhoons and tropical storms which occasionally hit Hong Kong and the Philippines. Heavy rains in September and October can cause minor disruptions. Even so, it’s rare to see several days of bad weather. Note that online weather forecasts are always on the pessimistic side: a whole week with the thunderstorm icon doesn’t mean it will rain all day!

1. Best time to go to Phuket

It can’t rain all the time

Good for: Couples, Families, Food, Nightlife

The best time to visit Phuket is from December through March. This is the north-east monsoon season, during which time mainland Thailand blocks the monsoon rains from reaching the island, leaving nothing but cool breezes and blue skies overhead.

The average temperature is between 75°F to 89°F and the humidity is at its lowest during these months, making it the most comfortable time to visit this vibrant and historic city. Enjoy vibrant nightlife, days out shopping or sightseeing, and fresh, delicious meals on open patios.

2. Hottest time in Phuket

There’s a season for everyone

Good for: Couples, Families, Photo

The hottest period in Phuket is from April through May, with temperatures ranging from 80°F to 95°F. Humidity is high as well, which can make the days feel even hotter. Occasional short, thundery showers bring a little relief from the heat. There’s also the Thai New Year festival of Songkran in mid-April when you’re likely to get splashed with cold water as part of the celebrations.

Locals enjoy visiting in June, July, and August. The weather in Phuket is generally pleasant and the island’s favorite attractions remain uncrowded. The usual pattern is for brief but heavy showers, with plenty of sunshine between downpours. Temperatures over this period range between 70°F and 90°F.

3. Low season in Phuket

Surf’s up during the rainy season

Good for: Adventure, Couples, Unusual

The weather in Phuket is usually at its worst in September and early October during monsoon season. These months see the heaviest rainfall and the roughest seas. That said, if you enjoy water sports such as surfing, windsurfing, and jet skiing, you will likely find this season is the most fun time to visit.

You’ll find the beaches, attractions, restaurants, and roads are all relatively quiet during this period. Even during these months, though, you can usually expect long sunny spells between the showers. If you’re looking for off-season prices, smaller crowds, or powerful waves, this could be the time for you. Read more
