Top neighborhoods in Tempe

Downtown Tempe
Mill Avenue buzzes with energy from ASU students mingling at outdoor patios and neon-lit storefronts. Tempe Town Lake offers scenic waterfront trails where you can watch paddleboarders glide across the glassy surface. Street performers and food trucks add vibrant touches to the tree-lined walkways that connect campus quads to lakefront recreation areas. Light rail connects directly to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, making transportation a breeze. You'll find everything from late-night pizza joints to upscale lakefront restaurants with plenty of patio dining options. Mid-range hotels cater to university visitors, with rates that fluctuate during ASU events.

Maple-Ash
Step into Tempe's Maple-Ash neighborhood, where historic bungalows and craftsman homes from the early 1900s line tree-canopied streets. This quiet residential haven offers an authentic glimpse into local life away from tourist crowds. Architecture buffs will appreciate the well-preserved period details while everyone enjoys the peaceful atmosphere perfect for contemplative strolls. While primarily residential, Maple-Ash sits conveniently near Arizona State University and the bustling Mill Avenue District. Two tram stops make exploring wider Tempe a breeze. Visitors typically stay in unique converted historic homes rather than hotels, adding to the neighborhood's genuine charm.

Riverside
Riverside offers the perfect mix of nature and college-town energy in Tempe. Waterfront paths along Tempe Town Lake invite you to stroll, paddleboard, or just watch the sunset with mountain views. The peaceful residential streets give you a break from tourist crowds while still keeping you close to Arizona State University's cultural scene. Local coffee shops and casual eateries dot the neighborhood with university-friendly prices. Most visitors stay in vacation rentals or small boutique properties that feel like a home away from home. With limited public transit, plan on walking the waterfront, biking the dedicated lanes, or driving to explore beyond.

University Heights
University Heights buzzes with authentic college town energy around Arizona State University's sprawling campus. Students fill the tree-lined quads, crowd into late-night pizza joints, and cheer at Sun Devil Stadium on game days. The iconic Hayden Library anchors the academic side while Mill Avenue's neon-lit storefronts create a lively corridor just blocks away. Budget-friendly eateries from food trucks to casual chains make dining easy on any wallet. Getting around couldn't be simpler with ASU's free campus shuttles, Valley Metro light rail connecting to Phoenix, and abundant bike lanes throughout the neighborhood.

Double Butte
Tempe's Double Butte neighborhood offers attractions including Diablo Stadium.

Kayak across Tempe Town Lake before wandering through Arizona State University's sprawling campus, where the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Gammage Auditorium hosts Broadway shows. Mill Avenue District buzzes with college-town energy, its restaurants and bars filled with students debating Sun Devils' latest game. Climb 'A' Mountain for sunset views that explain why locals tolerate summer heat without complaint. LEGOLAND Discovery Center and SEA LIFE Aquarium offer air-conditioned refuge when temperatures soar. Tempe Beach Park hosts concerts where families spread blankets while paddleboarders glide past. The vibrant nightlife scene stands out in a region not known for after-dark options – proof that 180,000 university students can reshape a city's personality.

SpringHill Suites Tempe at Arizona Mills Mall
"One hiccup from a very rude evening desk clerk didn't us from loving our stay here. Will definitely stay again."
Sonesta Select Tempe Downtown
"A short overnight stay. Carpet in the hallways had a lot of spots amongst the designs. Room A/C was quite loud but room was too warm if it got turned off. I complained to man at front counter. He will put in a work order. Staff were helpful. I did not have timeframes to use the meal service. Asked for a quiet room and I got put past about 40 or more rooms at end of corridor. Almost too far with heavy suitcases but I am younger. If an older person had to walk that far they would be disappointed in room distance from any elevator. Thank you"

Wyndham Phoenix Airport/Tempe
"Staff were wonderful - friendly, helpful. Tanner was closing the bar as we checked in, asked him if we could order a drink and he welcomed us, mixed a very welcome cocktail (flight delay, connections missed), offered a second beverage before he left with an amazingly friendly attitude. Roberta checked us in, very welcoming, nice humour, shared info on amenities, totally helpful. Ginger was very helpful checking us out and getting transport to the airport. Hotel was clean and attractive, decor was a little ‘tired’. Last minute need for an airport hotel, would stay here again."
