Beneath the watchful gaze of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, thousands of sandhill cranes descend upon Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge each spring and fall. Their prehistoric calls echo across wetlands where bird enthusiasts aim cameras with religious devotion. The Transportation of the West Museum chronicles the region's evolution with surprising humor and detail. After watching wildlife, try your hand at the Monte Vista Golf Club where prairie views compensate for any wayward shots. The Great Sand Dunes rise improbably nearby, while Rio Grande National Forest offers cool respite from summer heat. This small town punches well above its weight in natural splendor, proving that sometimes the most memorable destinations aren't the ones with the most people.
Beautiful location, near the Great Sand Dunes and wonderful star gazing. The staff were family and supportive. The tent we stayed in was wonderful. The shared bathrooms and were clean and the staff did an excellent job of attending to any consistent clean up. Campers should be prepared for cooler nights but overall a great experience.
What a wonderful place for children! Our family enjoyed the clean and well stocked cabin, and also the charming gazebo/ creek area. Thank you for creating such a welcoming environment.
The room was clean and quiet. The prices were great. This new way to stay at a hotel was a bit frightening at first (i.e., there are no staff at all at the hotel, no check-in people, no one to ask for anything, etc.) but since I had no questions, I found it to be fine.
Modern and clean facility. Nice well stocked breakfast buffet. Friendly and helpful staff. Was given lead on how to obtain solar eclipse eyeglasses which worked out. Convenient to restaurants. 30 miles from Great Sand Dunes National Park entrance, but that was not an issue.
The hotel was well maintained and clean. The room was big, had a small fridge, microwave. The breakfast was very nice a lot of options and everything was fresh and plentiful. Will stay agin when we come back to town.
The breakfast on Saturday morning was amazing. Green chili was a hit . Pluse waffles sooo good . Also pet friendly is a must for my family . I wish pool hours would go until 11pm as we are there to relax and would've like to swim late . My daughter in college there that way we came out .
Pleasant and comfortable. This is a cool old Lodge, not a typical hotel. Great continental breakfast with unique and different items. Good coffee. Staff was very patient with our autistic 12 year old.
This is a clean, pet friendly motel. The cabin was a little dated but clean and comfy. Great beds, all the amenities and set up with everything you'd need to stay for a week or two, pots, pans dishes etc. Will stay there again!
