Top neighborhoods in St. Louis

Downtown St. Louis
Downtown St. Louis serves up major attractions with a side of Midwest charm. The gleaming Gateway Arch watches over historic red-brick buildings, while baseball fans stream toward Busch Stadium on game days. Museum lovers can dive into exhibits at the National Blues Museum, and history buffs will appreciate the limestone Old Courthouse. The neighborhood transforms when Cardinals fans flood the streets, creating an electric atmosphere you can't help but join. Restaurants range from quick lunch spots to upscale steakhouses, with something for every budget. Three convenient MetroLink stations make getting around a breeze, connecting you to the airport and beyond. Hotels cater mainly to business travelers but offer comfortable bases for exploring this walkable downtown core.

Central West End
Bordering Forest Park with free cultural institutions, this St. Louis neighborhood boasts a bustling commercial district along Euclid Avenue and the world's largest mosaic collection at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis.

Soulard
Historic Soulard charms visitors with cobblestone streets and red brick buildings dating back to the 19th century. The neighborhood buzzes around Soulard Farmers Market, one of America's oldest continuous public markets operating since 1779. St. Louis's French heritage shines through local architecture while the area hosts the country's second-largest Mardi Gras celebration outside New Orleans. Creole-influenced cuisine dominates the food scene, from casual taverns to upscale bistros serving gumbo and po'boys. Boutique inns and historic bed & breakfasts in converted 19th-century homes offer character-filled accommodations. The compact layout makes Soulard perfect for walking, with the Mississippi River waterfront accessible nearby.

The Grove
The Grove pulses with energy as St. Louis's premier LGBTQ+ friendly district. Rainbow crosswalks guide you between craft cocktail lounges, live music venues, and eclectic shops housed in colorful storefronts. Murals wrap around converted warehouses that host everything from late-night dance parties to drag performances, while vintage boutiques and record stores offer daytime browsing. The neighborhood serves up an appetizing mix of gastropubs, late-night diners, and cocktail spots with creative American fusion. MetroLink and bus routes connect you easily to downtown, though most visitors enjoy exploring the compact district on foot. Peak nightlife runs Thursday through Saturday when the streets come alive with celebration and community spirit.

Lafayette Square
Lafayette Square charms with its impressive Victorian mansions and French Second Empire architecture along tree-canopied streets. The neighborhood surrounds the historic 30-acre Lafayette Park, St. Louis' oldest public park, featuring walking paths, a picturesque bandstand, and summer concerts. Architecture enthusiasts will appreciate the ornate ironwork, mansard roofs, and bay windows that transform this area into an outdoor architectural museum. Intimate bistros and cafes serve American comfort food throughout this quiet residential haven. Charming bed-and-breakfasts in restored Victorian homes provide cozy accommodations with period furnishings. The neighborhood is highly walkable with abundant street parking for exploring beyond its peaceful boundaries.

St. Louis and related destinations
Beneath the iconic Gateway Arch, baseball fans flock to Busch Stadium while blues aficionados find their rhythm at the National Blues Museum. Union Station houses both architectural splendor and the St. Louis Aquarium, where underwater worlds unfold behind glass. City Museum defies description – part playground, part art installation, where salvaged industrial objects become climbing structures. The zoo in Forest Park remains remarkably free, a tradition locals fiercely defend. Theater-goers have their pick between the ornate Peabody Opera House and smaller venues showcasing homegrown talent. Cardinals devotees make pilgrimages to the team's Hall of Fame, where baseball history feels like religious experience.

Clayton Plaza Hotel & Extended Stay
"The hotel was excellent, clean, and well located to area attractions. The breakfast was very good. Parking was $6 per day which was very reasonable compared to other hotels in the area. The hotel is close to metro lines and Washington University. The staff was very helpful when we inquired about a couple things. We would definitely stay here again."
Hyatt Regency St. Louis at The Arch
"The lady, I did not catch her name, who checked us in was so kind! She was such a bright light and was so fun to chat with while getting checked in. They have amazing staff and the room was clean, the beds are so comfortable!"
Drury Plaza Hotel St. Louis at the Arch
"Beautiful view, could see arch from room window. Loved room - clean, comfortable, shower was hot with great water pressure. Food was good and the wait staff were friendly. Laverne was the best. The drink and snack time from 5:30pm to 7pm was fantastic. Easily dinner if you want and 3 drinks more than enough included with your stay. Parking was convenient, very easy in and out. Easy location to drive places. Location was fantastic. The Arch National Park was right next door and the old courthouse museum across the street. It was fun to walk around and explore. My only complaint was no adult only time in the pool area. Every time my husband and I checked it out, it was full of kids yelling and running around. We did try to enjoy our last night, but it was hard to enjoy. The entire time we were in the hot tub, there were multiple children under 8 in the tub. No adult paying attention to what they were doing. Almost kicked in the face by a 4 yo trying to use it as a kiddie swimming pool, legs being bumped and toes stepped on. Went and sat at table to see if maybe would leave since there before us but still running back and forth between hot tub and pool after 9pm, so headed back to our room. Also 2nd hot tub was broke, not hot and jets not working. Was a great fun place to stay despite the pool situation"

"Easy free parking"
River City Casino & Hotel
"Kellie & Emoni at the check-in were so friendly & helpful! The room was comfortable, the walk-in shower is wonderful with both rain & normal shower heads. For an older hotel, I found it to be well appointed with plenty of storage & furniture. The mattress was pretty firm which we were very happy with. The casino is huge with lots & lots of various slots, & table games. No luck here but not unexpected! The cigarette smoke from that side of the casino is pretty evident in the non-smoking portion."
Marriott St. Louis Grand
"Staff was friendly and helped extremely well. My stay was made great and the convention was great"
Forest Park Hotel by MDR
"Free parking, clean big room, with microwave and fridge and affordable."
Magnolia Hotel St. Louis, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel
"Staff were friendly and helpful. Room and common areas were clean. We like that our dog was able to stay with us for no extra charge. The only negative thing I'd mention is that the TV in our room kept going in and out. The picture and audio were glitching. Not the end of the world though. We both noted that the mattress and pillows were quite comfortable. I'm definitely going to be staying here while visiting again."
