2. Khon at Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre

Former cinema which now hosts classical Thai dance performances

Good for: History, Nightlife, Unusual

Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre is home to elaborate performances of the traditional Thai masked dance, Khon. Many characters from Thai antiquity have staked a claim in popular culture but none are as well-known as the mischievous monkey Haruman, who tricked the gods into sending him back to Earth.

For people unfamiliar with this classical Thai dance, there’s a short video presentation explaining the significance of the movements. There’s also a screen translating the dialog in English. This is a historic tale which is originally part of the epic poem Ramayana. Khon was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018.

Location: 66 Wang Burapha Phirom, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

Open: Monday–Friday at 1 pm, 2.30 pm, and 4 pm (performances not held on Saturday and Sunday)
