Basic accommodation

Very basic small double room. Bathroom was decent as was the to. Sparse furniture was in poor condition. Bed was narrow

8/10 Very good

Nice place with very friendly staff. Only stayed the one night as a stopover. Room was comfortable and clean, maybe could do with a refresh but totally fine for a short stay. A little outside Barnard centre, about 20 minute easy walk Had an evening meal in the bar which was really nice and great value for money. The bar area itself was very nice with a relaxed atmosphere, great to unwind. The included breakfast was very good with a variety of choice. If yiur looking for a stopover with breakfast in a quiet area close to Barnard then you wont go wrong here.

I think we were unfortunate arriving when there was a problem with the heating. As a result the room had no hot water (we found no-one to ask about it until the following morning only to be told the boiler had clicked out but they had switched back on now). We were also unable to switch the TV on. The instruction books says there were two devices but we could only find one. Gain it was too late to find anyone to help

Room needs a tray on which to place suitcase. Otherwise, you have to use one of the beds to use your suitcase. The cold tap drips. Shower needs some sort of holder for soap, shampoo etc. Difficult to use otherwise because it is very small

Only Bed No Breakfast

The kitchen, restaurant and bar were not open for the date of our visit so no review of food or the public areas can be given. The accommodation however was made available. This of course meant that breakfast could not be reviewed as it was also not available. The closure was temporary but did impact our visit somewhat. My review feeling is that we should have been informed in advance as the closure was planned. The bedroom was ok, nothing special and in need of a bit or TLC. Beds were OK, not the best I’ve slept on however bed linen and towels were good. For the evening meal we walked into town and had a great meal and we arranged breakfast there for ourselves. We would normally have eaten at the place we were staying in but other good eateries are available in Barnard Castle

Redwell Rhubard

Arrived to find notes on both doors saying they were closed due to refurbishment, not a good start. Telephoned the establishment to be told they were honouring overnight guests. Side door was duly unlocked and we were led to reception where we were told the floor in the kitchen was being replaced so there would be no breakfast which was included in our room rate. I asked why we had not been told and the response was that it was an emergency. So what should we do for breakfast I said and was told a 15 minute walk into town would leave us with some alternative options. Gareth, the only guy dealing with check in, was going through this routine with other people checking in after us. Hotels.com have said they will get to the bottom of this, but not even to be offered a partial refund by The Red Well Inn was surprising. The room was ok, nothing special and in need of a bit or TLC. Beds were not the best I’ve slept on but not terrible. For the evening meal we walked into town and had a great meal at the Three Horseshoes. The staff at the Three Horseshoes informed us that every year during The Applebey Horse Fair the Red Well Inn closes, this would be useful information for booking sites. I will be avoiding not only the Red Well Inn but also other Buckley Taverns, this experience was thoroughly unacceptable.

Clean spacious room. Staff very friendly. Shower room and decor in general could do with update. But all in all value for money.

Nice and comfortable. Easy parking, not too far from town. Helpful, friendly staff. Bonus roof terrace room 3, for morning coffee. Good breakfast.

Large & friendly old inn, Barnard Castle outskirts

Large & friendly old inn about 15 mins walk from centre of Barnard Castle. Pub serves food and has letting rooms plus adjoining caravan/campervan site. Some might find the rooms a little basic but my room was clean, light and airy, the bed comfortable. I had a small dressing room/study area between bedroom and bathroom which would have been great for catching up on work or writing memoirs/novel etc! I enjoyed my stay, slept well and deeply, and they did me a fantastic gluten free full English breakfast the next morning.

Booked this at it's advertised as having a restaurant. Turns out that's not the case on a Sunday evening though and the bar closed at 7pm.

8/10 Very good

Greeted with a warm and kind welcome. Very easy to find and plenty of parking on site. It was a perfect choice for the 1 night stay we had in breaking a long drive from the north of Scotland to south yorkshire. Food and drink in the inn was very nice and the service by the staff likewise. Breakfast was included in the cost of the stay and we knew it was going to be as good as its past reviews. All in all a great stay.

Grand for a one night stop over

A one night stop over, small room which we knew we had booked. A bit of a problem with the T V which was sorted, using the i Player. Couldn't fault the staff, a very pleasant stay and we would go back there again.

Old established pub on the outskirts of Barnard Castle, within a 15 min walk of it's shopping area. Decorated to a good standard, room was bigger than average, with all the usual facilities in working order. However the bed was very soft & its mattress in need of replacement. Food the usual pub menu & of a reasonable standard. A good cooked breakfast was within the room tariff, making it a good value stay.

Staff were lovely and breakfast very good. The hotel needs a deep clean specially the carpets. Requires a paint job. The bed wasn't comfortable for me. Bathroom needs a makeover.
