Our stay at Angelats Hotel was top notch on every account. The hotel is the converted country home of the Batlló Family - the family that commissioned Gaudi to design their home in Barcelona. But don’t expect to see Gaudi here. This home is much more like stepping into an English manor house. In fact, my wife and I kept expecting there to be a murder, and Hercule Poirot to be on scene to solve the mystery. (When a thunderstorm briefly knocked out the power, we were very worried what would be found when the lights came back on.)
Our room was simple, and well appointed. We had a corner with stunning views and an amazing cross breeze. The rooms are without air conditioning, but we were never uncomfortable in late July while it was above 90 F in Barcelona.
In addition to the rooms, the hotel has a snooker table, a library, a game room and two additional salons. All were beautifully furnished with antiques.
Attached to the hotel is a lovely bar and restaurant. The restaurant’s selection of tapas, entrees, deserts and wines was excellent. The grounds include multiple hiking trails and a 1,000 year old tree.
While were tempted to never leave, our excursions to hiking trails in the area were wonderful. Ribes de Friser is a lovely town with a host of cafes and restaurants. You can also catch the train to Vall de Núria in about 5 minutes from the hotel. This is an excursion not to be missed.
