Could do better
I travel frequently for business and usually stay on the Quayside when in Newcastle, but opted to try the Marriott Gateshead due to its location and past reputation. Unfortunately, the stay was disappointing.
The room was uncomfortably hot and the air conditioning was ineffective, despite raising this with reception. Housekeeping was well below standard — towels were stained (one even smelt of food), toiletries weren’t replenished over five nights despite requests, and used glasses weren’t cleaned. On one day, I even stepped on a small pebble that had somehow ended up in the room — I always remove my shoes, so can only assume it came in with housekeeping.
The bathroom was dated and in need of a deep clean, with visible mould. The TV repeatedly turned itself off, and the remote control had no battery cover — just a piece of tape holding it together.
I was also surprised to be asked whether I wanted daily cleaning, which felt like a cost-saving measure rather than a service option. I said yes, but the standard remained poor throughout.
As a long-standing business traveller, I expect better from a Marriott-branded hotel. I won’t be returning, but hope this feedback helps improve the experience for others.
