The Gothenburg Maritime Museum is a historical museum with a focus on all things related to the sea. It consists of 13 different vessels which you can board on the Göta River in central Gothenburg. The museum is naturally well worth a visit for anybody with an interest in history, but it's also great for kids and families. Fun activities for kids are organised regularly such as Virvelina's Workshop and Tim's Ocean Lab, and there is always plenty going on during the school holidays. The floating museum is also available to book for events such as birthday dinners, corporate get-togethers and children's parties.

What are the highlights of the Gothenburg Maritime Museum?

If you're interested in history, ships or exciting adventures out on the seven seas then the Maritime Museum is an absolute must-see on your visit to Gothenburg. The 13 ships which are anchored in the Port of Gothenburg and make up the museum are all from different time periods and include tugboats, naval ships and even a submarine. Step on board the various vessels and head beneath the surface or high up on the fire boats and barges all while learning more about the history of the ships and their purpose. Treasure hunts and other fun activities are often organised to keep smaller visitors entertained.

Good to know about the Maritime Museum

The Gothenburg Maritime Museum is located in central Gothenburg and is close to many other sights. Right next door is the Gothenburg Opera House and not too far away you'll find the Lilla Bommen Marina and the Nordstaden Shopping Centre. To get the most out of your visit, book yourself a spot on a guided tour or download a free audio guide. If you want to save some money you can visit outside of high season when the prices are a little lower. However, opening hours are somewhat shorter in low season so be sure to check the museum's website in advance to see when they'll be open. The museum also has a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and mementos to take home.
