Ship with the soul of Admiral Yi Sun-sin

The Turtle Ship in Tongyeong is anchored in front of Gangguan Munhwa Madang. It was commissioned by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to the Korean Navy in 1990 to commemorate the spirit of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, and was built with an investment of KRW 2.2 billion to actual size. Originally anchored in Hangang Citizens Park, the Turtle Ship became the first ship to pass through the Demilitarized Zone downstream of the Hangang River since the division of Korea. The ship has been on display in Tongyeong since November 16, 2005, at the site of Admiral Yi's biggest victory in the Battle of Hansan Island.

There are three Turtle Ships and one Panokseon naval vessel docked to Gangguan Port today. Panokseon is a naval battleship with the same basic structure as the Turtle Ship. The difference is that Turtle Ships have the dragon head to the bow and armoured cover on its deck, making it a more potent fighting vessel. This is a chance to see the military ships used by Joseon.

    Dongpirang Mural Village

    Village with an exotic background

    Dongpirang Mural Village

    • Foto

Dongpirang Mural Village, also called the Montmartre of Korea, is located on the hill on the border between Taepyeong-dong and Dongho-dong in Tongyeong. Dongpirang was originally a "daldongne," a collection of improvised housing built on slopes by the impoverished. Dongpirang indeed sits on a sloped hill on Gangguan, with its small buildings coming together into a maze-like structure. Today's village is full of cutesy wall paintings, starting from the entrance to the village.

This village took on its present form when local artists, who did not like the plans to demolish the village, started painting on the walls of the village. The City of Tongyeong withdrew the plan and designated it as an art village. As tourists began to visit, the village was saved from its fate. Follow the guiding words, "Dreams live in Dongpirang," and enter the village to see the paintings of animals and cartoon figures across the walls and alleyways.
