The city of Sendai initially developed as a castle town belonging to the wealthy Date clan. The vast Sendai Plain is surrounded by a rich natural environment made up of mountains and the sea, which means a constant supply of fresh seafood and mountain delicacies.

Sendai is full of restaurants that are worth checking out, covering everything from traditional Japanese restaurants, sushi restaurants and izakayas (Japanese-style pubs) to international cuisine at Chinese and Italian restaurants, as well as the city's famous beef tongue restaurants. Whether you're coming to Sendai specifically or just stopping by en route to other parts of the Tohoku region, you'll always dine well here.

    Umami Tasuke

The originator of grilled beef tongue in Sendai

    Umami Tasuke
    • Gastronomía

Umami Tasuke is said to be the originator of Sendai’s famous grilled beef tongue delicacy. Sticking to the teachings of the restaurant’s founder, Keishiro Sano, they serve beef tongue seasoned only with salt. They also stick to their original policy of slicing meat with a kitchen knife rather than using any machine.

In 1948, not long after the war, Keishiro Sano decided to focus on serving beef tongue as a unique ingredient that other restaurants would struggle to imitate, and so he opened a dedicated beef tongue restaurant in the city centre. Ever since then, Umami Tasuke has been drawing the crowds thanks to its exquisitely salted beef tongue.
