Choose this hotel for its phenomenal location and great amenities. It's right at Black Rock Beach, with great access to the ocean, snorkeling, and if you're adventurous, jumping off of Black Rock. The pool area is great, and the staff is super friendly and helpful. They also have a great gym. It's walking distance from Whaler's Village, which is a small shopping mall with excellent restaurant options (our favorites were Island Vintage Coffee for breakfast and coffee, and Monkeypod, Ulu and Maui Brewing Company for dinner).
There are a few downsides to this hotel; is a little dated and the buildings can be a bit of a maze. Our room had old plumbing, which could be somewhat noisy at time. The other thing is that the food/ dining options in the hotel aren't that great. The lobby bar (Sandbar) has amazing mixology style cocktails, but food options, and particularly in the pool bar, aren't on par with the prices.
If you factor in that it's an expensive resort (all fees included, we paid close to $600 power night), it explains the 4-star review. I guess it's the location that drives most of the price, but at that rate, I expect a bit more.
Nevertheless, we had a great stay, and relaxing vacation.
