Taupō Central
Taupō Central serves up lakefront adventures right on New Zealand's largest lake with thermal hot springs for soaking tired muscles. The marina bustles with sailing activity while the Great Lake Walkway offers stunning water views for walkers and cyclists. You'll find Māori cultural experiences, trout fishing spots, and plenty of outdoor adventure shops to gear up for local excursions. Lakeside restaurants range from casual fish and chips to upscale dining with local specialties. Accommodations include everything from budget-friendly backpacker hostels to premium thermal spa resorts with hot tubs. The compact town center is easily walkable, with regular bus services connecting to major attractions like the thundering Huka Falls nearby.

Acacia Bay
Acacia Bay delivers Lake Taupo's best views without the tourist hustle. Sandy beaches invite lazy days of swimming and kayaking, while scenic walking tracks wind along the shoreline. Pack a picnic to catch those jaw-dropping sunsets painting the western sky, or try your luck fishing for lake trout in crystal-clear waters. Casual lakeside cafes serve fresh fish and ice cream, but most close early. Most visitors stay in holiday homes and baches with kitchens instead of hotels. A car is essential for exploring since public transport is limited, though walking paths connect the main lakefront areas.

Richmond Heights
Richmond Heights delivers a true slice of Kiwi suburban life just minutes from Taupo's attractions. Peaceful tree-lined streets lead to nearby Waipahihi Botanical Gardens and Lake Taupo's shores. The neighborhood's spacious homes and mountain views create a perfect retreat for travelers seeking outdoor adventure and local charm away from tourist crowds. Holiday homes and B&Bs dominate the accommodation scene, offering authentic New Zealand living experiences with full kitchens and gardens. While restaurants are sparse within the neighborhood, a quick 5-10 minute drive takes you to Taupo's dining options, hot springs, and marina. A rental car is your best bet for exploring this relaxed residential haven.
Hilltop
Hilltop's peaceful residential streets offer panoramic views of Lake Taupo that'll make your jaw drop. This upscale neighborhood is perfect for travelers who want scenic beauty without tourist crowds. Take a short drive to enjoy Taupo Hot Springs, or explore nearby Waipahihi Botanical Gardens and the famous Maori Carvings. Self-catering holiday homes and luxury B&Bs dominate the accommodation scene, most featuring those million-dollar lake views. You'll need a rental car to get around, as public transit is limited. The neighborhood's tranquility is its main attraction, with central Taupo's restaurants and shops just a 10-minute drive away.

Wharewaka
Taupō's Wharewaka neighborhood is home to attractions such as Lake Taupō and The Landing Lake Taupō.

Learn more about Taupō
Volcanic energy bubbles beneath the surface in this lakeside playground. Dip into Spa Thermal Park's steaming waters where hot springs meet the cool Waikato River. At Huka Falls, the mighty river narrows dramatically, forcing turquoise water through a volcanic gorge with thunderous power. Lake Taupō's crystal waters invite fishing for trophy trout or cruising to view ancient Māori rock carvings. Adrenaline seekers can skydive above the massive caldera or bungy jump over the river. For a gentler pace, explore the lakefront promenade with its cafés and ice cream shops. The surrounding volcanic plateau offers hiking trails through otherworldly landscapes, while nearby Tongariro National Park tempts with its famous Alpine Crossing.

Oasis Beach Motel

Cascades Lakefront Motel
"Good place right next to the lake, friendly host hightly recommend"
Sacred Waters
"I had a pleasant stay overall. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the location is excellent—close to everything you need in Taupō. However, the property could really benefit from some upgrades. The furniture feels quite dated, the bed was not comfortable at all, and the sofa couch and carpet were not up to the standard shown in the photos. Also, be sure to bring your own toothbrush, as one is not provided. Overall, I’d rate this property 7/10. With some updates to the furnishings and better attention to guest amenities, it could be a much better experience."
Quality Inn Acapulco Taupo
"Very nice and clean property"
Hilton Lake Taupo
"Great spot view was amazing and bed very comfortable, but many things in the heritage side need maintaining. Electrical crackling near the bed. Some lights didn't work. The shower head was split and leaking touch points were old and worn (toilet flush button etc) A note, some rooms say tub or shower. Not necessarily both. Last time we stayed here I think we got the best room they had. This time was supposed to be deluxe but was just ok. Staff were great though."
Tui Oaks Motel
"Tidy ,well equipped, roomy and warm"
Sails On The Lake

Taupo Thermal Motel & Spa - Adults Only
